Photo of Children LaugingThe Waterfront Museum is delighted to announce it is open for school visits for students of all ages. With the recent award of a National Park Service "National Maritime Education Initiative" grant, the museum directs educational programs throughout the year.

With a permanent exhibit of artifacts and hands-on experiences including knot-tying, why boats float, identification of the different types of vessels that crisscross the harbor daily, feeling the decks move beneath their feet, hearing waterfront sounds, and understanding the tides, the barge serves as a "floating classroom" for an excellent educational visit. For many visitors, it is their first time aboard a boat or their first time to view this community's once bustling waterfront. Watch a movie by PS 10's Ms. Cyphers' fourth grade class.

Learning is fun when its on the barge. Listen to Museum Director David Sharps discuss the waterfront online! During a one-hour visit, students will learn about the following topics:
Geography of the New York Harbor History of the Tug and Barge "Lighterage Era" (1860-1960)
Factors that contributed to dilapidated shores and abandoned waterfronts How food and commercial goods were transported prior to today's bridges and tunnels
Rescue and restoration of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Barge Identification tips for harbor vessels.
With extra time, the children can enjoy a packed lunch Prices are $7.00 per person. The barge is on the National Register of Historic Places as the only surviving wooden example of the railroad navy.

We accept reservations by credit card, Donate Logo or check but please e-mail to schedule a trip and receive our educational curriculum. A 50% deposit is required with each reservation.
